New Spacesuit System Turns Astronauts' Pee into Safe Drinking Water

Scientists have come up with a new way to help astronauts stay clean and hydrated during spacewalks. Right now, astronauts wear a special diaper called the Maximum Absorbency Garment (MAG) that collects their pee and poop. But wearing this diaper for a long time can cause health problems like infections and stomach issues.

Instead of the old system, researchers have designed a new urine collection and filtration system. This new system uses a special cup to collect the pee and a vacuum pump to move it into a filter. The filter uses a process called forward and reverse osmosis to turn the pee into clean drinking water. This system can collect and recycle about 85% of the urine, making it safe and drinkable for astronauts.

The new system is made with comfortable and flexible materials that are lined with antimicrobial fabric to keep astronauts healthy. It’s also designed to fit both male and female astronauts perfectly. The system uses less energy and can fit inside the spacesuit without making it too heavy. This way, astronauts can have enough water to drink during their long spacewalks and stay hydrated without needing to carry extra water from Earth.

Scientists believe this new urine recycling system will make spacewalks safer and more efficient. It will help astronauts perform better and stay healthy during their missions, especially as NASA prepares for future trips to the Moon and beyond.
